Physical activity is known to reduce the risk of premature death from cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet little is known about the influence of knowledge of having CVD risk factors on readiness to adopt physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a predictive relationship between knowledge of having health care provider diagnosed CVD risk factors and readiness for physical activity among older women in Eastern Kentucky. The dependent variable was readiness for physical activity while independent variables included Risk Factor Identification, Factors Related to Readiness for Physical Activity, Perceived Risk of CVD, Perceived Influence of CVD Risk Factors on Dying from Heart Disease, Health Benefits of Physical Activity, and the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale.

The study design was a cross-sectional correlational descriptive study that employed a seven-page 25 item self-report survey methodology for data collection. Data were collected from senior programs in a five county region in Eastern Kentucky. A total of 150 subjects 55 years of age and older completed surveys.

Older women in Eastern Kentucky had an average of 3.85 overall CVD risk factors. Among these women, 5.3% were staged in Precontemplation, 6.0% in Contemplation, 16.7% in Preparation, 8.7% in Action, and 59.3% in Maintenance. Over one-half of the women were regularly physically active. Having fewer CVD risk factors and being married or widowed predicted staging in maintenance (p < .01). Also having knowledge of the perceived risk of having a heart attack and heart disease was associated with being grouped in a higher stage of readiness (p < .05). The CVD risk factors most likely to predict readiness for physical activity were BMI ( p < .01), being overweight (p < .01), and diabetes (p < .05). Depression (p < .01) was also found to predict readiness for physical activity. Finally, the higher older women perceived their current, or general health the greater their readiness for physical activity (p < .05).

In conclusion, older women in Eastern Kentucky were aware of the major factors that influence CVD risk and are aware of the health benefits of physical activity. For this sample, having fewer CVD risk factors predicted a higher readiness for physical activity.
