Thesis (Psy.D.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2004.
This dissertation examines the experience of daughters-in-law as caregivers of a parent-in-law with dementia. It presents a review of the literature on daughters and daughters-in-law as multigenerational caregivers integrating perspectives of role theory, social exchange theory, and salutogenic theory. Using phenomenological research methods, the study utilized in-depth interviews with 11 participants in order to understand the unique experience of these women. Three metathemes emerged: (a) values orientation, (b) reciprocity, and (c) factors that enhance coping. Three minor themes emerged: (a) personal growth and satisfaction, (b) improved marital and family function, and (c) experience of loss and anticipatory grief. These themes and corresponding sub-themes are examined. Clinical implications and future directions are discussed.
