Consumers of health care identify compassion as the cornerstone of quality nursing care and nurses express the desire to be compassionate. However, changes in the environment of nursing practice and nursing education challenge nurse educators attempting to include compassion in the curriculum. It becomes easy to assume that nursing students already "know" about compassion and other affective responses; therefore little time or space is allotted for this aspect of care (Anderson, 1998a).

The aim of this study was to explore with baccalaureate nurse educators their experience of compassion within the context of nursing education. van Manen's phenomenological method was used for this investigation because of the nature of the phenomenon of compassion and the exploratory intent of this study. Eleven nurse faculty participated in the open-ended interviews. Thematic analysis revealed seven essential themes. The themes that emerged are: Forming connections with others, walking a mile in their shoes, recognizing needs, burdens, and suffering, embracing the emotional response to suffering, acting to make it better, giving and receiving gifts, and being aware of the boundaries of the professional role.

The phenomenological description is: The lived experience of compassion for nurse faculty members begins with forming connections with others that enable faculty members to walk a mile in their shoes living their sufferings as if they were their own. Viewing life through another's eyes fosters recognition of needs and sufferings and brings about a powerful emotional response. This response impels the nurse faculty member to initiate action to alleviate the suffering. To alleviate the suffering, nurse faculty members are willing to go beyond what is expected and give a gift of self, time, or actions to the person in need. In giving that gift, nurse faculty members often received a gift in return. The boundaries of this experience are interpreted through the nurse faculty member's professional nursing role and the faculty role.
