The Leadership Characteristics Inventory (LCI) was an instrument developed to enable researchers and clinicians to assess leadership characteristics in order to evaluate the compatibility of style between co-leaders, link style with efficacy, and enable leaders to adjust their leadership styles according to their groups' needs. Also, the LCI may be useful to educators for training group counselors. The development of the LCI was conducted in three phases. First, the instrument was administered to 18 adult outpatient therapy groups around the country. During the second phase, two video taped vignettes of a group therapy leader conducting a simulated session were rated by five experts in group work. In Phase Three, 225 students viewed the vignettes and completed the LCI in order to rate the video taped leader.

Scale internal consistency reliabilities were moderate to high. Interrater reliability during Phase Two was high, and intercorrelations among subscales were moderate to high during Phase Two and low to moderate during Phase Three. Evidence of content validity was established during preliminary scale construction. Evidence of construct validity was provided during preliminary scale construction as well as during all three phases of the study. During Phase One, mean differences were examined among the three types of raters and supported different patterns of responding to the LCI depending on the type of rater. T-tests used during Phases Two and Three revealed significant mean differences among subscales for Groups A and B for most of the subscales. The current status of the LCI is that the scales appear sensitive enough overall to discriminate among various styles of leadership, however, a number of items had consistently poorer performance relative to others, and will be deleted from future versions of the instrument.
