Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Miami, 1992.
The main body of this study presents a pedagogical and formal analysis of four piano works: "Granada" ("Serenata"), "Sevilla" ("Sevillanas"), "Asturias" ("Leyenda") and "Castilla" ("Seguidillas"); from the Suite Espanola, Opus 47, one of Isaac Albeniz' (1860-1909) best-known collections. These selected pieces are pianistically the most engaging, popular and representative of Albeniz' Spanish style in the Suite Espanola, Opus 47.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In selecting the topic, the author found that there is a dearth of extant literature on Albeniz, consisting mostly of biographical and critical commentary in French, Spanish and Catalan languages. This study attempts to provide a clearer understanding of the musical language of Albeniz and his use of Spanish traditional idioms, and valuable pedagogical and analytical insights for college-level students and piano teachers who lack familiarity or experience with Spanish music. This information should lead to more authoritative performances and a better understanding of the unique Spanish qualities which the Suite Espanola, Opus 47 embodies.

The second chapter is a biography of Albeniz. The third chapter describes the contents of the Suite Espanola, Opus 47, including a diagram giving the individual titles of pieces, their key, date and dedication of each composition, and date of first edition.

Appendix I is a current discography of the solo piano, orchestral and guitar transcriptions for the complete Suite Espanola, Opus 47 and individual dances. Appendix II and III are tabulations by the author of discographies by two of Albeniz' biographers. A list of editions of the Suite Espanola, Opus 47 and an extensive Bibliography conclude this study.
