This experimental study was designed to investigate the influence of a short term quality intergenerational contact on the attitudes of children toward older adults. Glass and Trent's (1982) typology of approaches to change attitudes and Amir's (1969) Contact Hypothesis guided the development of the present study. The advisor for this study was Doctor Sarah H. Gueldner.

A pilot study was completed with 16 children and ten older adults to test the feasibility of the instruments and the intergenerational program. A full study was completed with 67 children and 17 older adults at a different location. Participants for the full study were recruited from a YMCA Senior Program and the YMCA summer camp. The program lasted three weeks with the children receiving the intervention for one hour a day three days a week with eight groups categorized by age and their pre-assignment group were conducted each day. A fourth week of the protocol was added so that children who had missed a day during the first three weeks could "make up" their missed days.

The findings of the study revealed that children who participated in the treatment had lower scores on their post-test survey, indicating that they had developed a more positive attitude toward older adults over the course of treatment. Two independent variables, time spent with related older adults and inclusion in the intergenerational treatment were significant in explaining the variance of the dependent variable, children's attitudes toward older adults.

Limitations of the study include lack of generalizability and methodological issues such as modest sample size and the possible effect of the researcher's visibility as facilitator for the study protocol. Conclusions were drawn and suggestions for future research were stated.
