This project looks at the educational crisis of contemporary Italy. It attempts to look at the crisis at both the theoretical and empirical levels. At the theoretical level, the dissertation explores Gramsci's theoretical principles, and what these can say about the relationship between education and the economy, an economy which displays a strongly corporate nature and experiences cyclical crises.

The discussion of the empirical data combines historical and anthropological aspects. They are examined at the light of the history of Italian education, the state formation and the role of centralized regionalism in creating Italy's current educational system. The work then presents two case studies, the first of a vocational school in Naples in Southern Italy and the second in a vocational school in Padua in Northern Italy. The field research for this work was carried out during the end of 2000 and the years 2001--2002.

Discussing the inadequacy of the dual approach between History and Anthropology, this project draws some conclusions about Gramsci's contributions by integrating both disciplines. It discusses also in particular the current state of Italian education, its fragmentation and separation between liberal art studies and vocational tracks and its influence on ideology which is presented on its influence on the economic, labor, linguistic and cultural market. This theoretical and empirical work adds something to political economic analysis; it can open a path to further enquiries into Italian anthropological studies. My personal experience in American Universities shows something new to the folklorization of Italian qualitative data in Anthropology and Sociology. While focusing on the perception and reaction of people in their settings, this work attempts as well to let people talk. However, the analysis goes beyond verbal language and clarifies critically people's attitudes in their resistance and agency towards changes. It uses a---'match-guise'---strategy proposed by some anthropologists and criticizes reductionism versus a wider process of knowledge.
