Uncertainties in hydraulic simulations using two-dimensional hydraulics and uncertainties arising from variation in Habitat Suitability Curves (HSC) lead to uncertainties in the estimation of Weighted Usable Area (WUA) in habitat modeling. The uncertainties in habitat modeling using cross-section data and one-dimensional hydraulics can under some circumstances be considerable. However, the systematic evaluation of uncertainties in habitat calculations arising from the uncertainties in hydraulic model solutions employing two-dimensional hydraulics and habitat suitability criteria has not been systematically examined. This study examines the uncertainties in fish habitat modeling results using two-dimensional hydraulics based on high resolution three-dimensional study site characterizations and quantified uncertainties in the depth and velocity solutions in conjunction with habitat suitability criteria. The study examines data for 18 rivers/streams from the Nooksack River Basin located in northwestern Washington State. The hydraulics were obtained from application of a quasi three-dimensional model developed by the USGS and several example Habitat Suitability Curves (HSC) for three life stages of chinook salmon (spawning, fry, and juvenile). A Monte Carlo simulation method was used to randomly vary the hydraulic solutions (i.e., depth and/or velocities) within quantified uncertainty ranges based on observed versus predicted depths and velocities from field validation studies and also to randomize the HSC used for a given simulation. The results showed that the uncertainties in the WUA due to the expected ranges of hydraulic uncertainties were relatively small and that the main cause of uncertainty in the habitat predictions was the HSC used. The two-dimensional hydraulic solutions obtained for calibrations within the range of expected practice can thus be considered to be very robust in terms of their input for use in habitat modeling and more care should be taken in the selection and validation of HSC.
