Given the aging population and the growing number of progressive diseases such as cancer and AIDS, occupational therapists are more frequently faced with the inevitability of dealing with the dying patient. Educational preparation for meeting the needs of the dying is imperative for successful therapeutic intervention. Currently, little is being done in curriculums to help students confront common death-related fears and attitudes and to promote an understanding of the role of the occupational therapist in palliative care environments.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The purpose of this study was to determine what effect death education and personal exposure to death had on students' awareness of death and dying issues. Fifty Chicago undergraduate occupational therapy students participated in a one-day death education workshop. Using a pre-test and post-test questionnaire, the study revealed that although participation in the workshop accounted for heightened awareness of death issues, personal exposure to death was not a significant factor.
