Evolutionary theory predicts that female intrasexual competition will occur when males of high quality are considered a resource. Women presumably compete in terms of attractiveness because it is one of the primary criteria used by men for mate selection. One competitive strategy that women use is derogation---any act intended to decrease a rival's perceived value. Three experiments were performed to investigate intrasexual competition via derogation.

First, the influence of estrogen (inferred from self-report ovulatory cycle location) on women's ratings of female facial attractiveness was examined. During periods of high estrogen derogation increased, as evidenced by lower ratings of female facial attractiveness. Second, participants in romantic relationships and single participants rated the attractiveness of female and male faces, which yielded no significant differences due to relationship status. Third, participants rated the attractiveness of female and male faces with an attractive female or male experimental confederate present. Women tested by the male confederate rated female faces significantly less attractive than women tested by the female confederate.

Additionally, a qualitative investigation was performed to determine the influence of competitor derogation in comparison to other intrasexual competition strategies. This study revealed that intrasexual competition is composed of competitor derogation, self promotion, attention manipulation, and manipulating mate value. Competitor derogation and self promotion were the most frequently mentioned, and thus, a forced-choice survey was constructed to examine their usage. The results suggested that people rarely use competitor derogation when they may use self promotion. The exception, however, is that women in romantic relationships derogated other women's attractiveness, whereas single women self promoted their own attractiveness.

This dissertation is an attempt to unearth the existence of female intrasexual competition using an empirical approach. The findings of these studies indicate that attractiveness is especially important for female intrasexual competition, and provides a valuable vehicle for research.
