This qualitative study used a combination of symbolic interaction and choice exchange theory to explore a cohort group of 8 married and 8 divorced professional women's perceptions of personality characteristics of the ideal male partner. A semi-structured interview format was used to obtain data from the women, 25 to 35 years old, with advanced degrees and currently working in their degree area. The 30 to 40 minute interviews were audiotaped, with pseudonyms rather than names used to maintain confidentiality. Audiotaped interviews were transcribed and data were analyzed for emerging themes.

First to emerge was the family oriented theme (six dimensions). Although priorities differed, commonalities existed between both groups on dimensions of paternal role and career support/involvement. Divorced women also valued emotional support and family cohesiveness. Financial support was mentioned by divorced women as unimportant in their ideal male. Under the interpersonal communication theme (verbal/nonverbal) (three dimensions), both groups were looking for intimacy (romance, love, affection) and understanding in their ideal male. Unlike married women, divorced women were seeking sensitivity in their ideal male. The intelligence theme (two dimensions) emerged in divorced women, but most married women did not mention it. Divorced women valued intellectual compatibility but clearly stated they were not looking at educational level in their ideal male. The ethics theme had one dimension, honesty. Although most married women did not mention this theme, divorced women considered honesty an important personality characteristic. The temperament theme had one dimension, sense of humor. Most married women did not emphasize this characteristic, but half the divorced women valued it. The spirituality/ religion theme (spiritual depth dimension) was valued equally by both groups of women. Under the influence of family of origin theme (two dimensions), family as role model was important to married women. Commonalities existed on parental influence on mate selection between both groups of women, but their perceptions were negative. Findings suggested that professional women value personality characteristics and behaviors fitting androgynous males rather than stereotypical traditional males.
