The extant literature in musical analysis provides approaches with inherent strengths and weaknesses. The assumption of this study is that no existing system of analysis has been developed specifically for the performance of Beethoven piano sonatas. This study investigates Beethoven piano sonatas from the Middle Period (1803-1814) for the development of an analytical tool that is tailored to those works and that will also incorporate a guide for their performance.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The method synthesized represents the strengths of existing methods of analysis, the interpretation of subjective responses to music, and an orientation to performance. Principles of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century performance practice which are relevant to the performance of Beethoven piano sonatas are incorporated. The method evolves from documentation such as the principles of performance practice, Beethoven's musical scores, and the correspondence of Beethoven and his students.

The steps in this research study are: an overview examination of (1) the Classic Era and (2) the Beethoven piano sonatas; (3) selection of piano sonatas from Beethoven's Middle Period; (4) a review of traditional methods of analysis and how performance needs are met; (5) the synthesis of a method of analysis; (6) the analyses of the "selected" sonatas which include a guide for their performance; and (7) an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the method of analysis synthesized and its implementation.

The method offers solutions to the problems facing the performer of Beethoven piano sonatas and attempts to integrate analysis with performance. The existing analyses of Beethoven's music tend to focus solely on specific aspects of the music and consequently do not adequately address problems of performance and the interpretation of the Beethoven piano sonatas.

The first part of the analyses provides an overview of Beethoven's piano sonatas and is guided by elements of La Rue style analysis. The second part offers interpretations which are derived from Beethoven's music and may in part implement existing methods of analysis. The final part provides a guide to performance.
