Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Wright Institute, 2004.

This investigation examined the association among personality characteristics, type of criminal offense and substance abuse in an adult female offender population. The present investigation predicted that personality traits would be significantly related to offense type and drug preference. The Adjective Check List (Gough & Heilbrun, 1980) and a crime and drug use survey were administered to 300 female inmates at a local county Jail. Hypotheses were tested using linear regression and zero-order correlations. Results are discussed in context of the theoretical and empirical literature on drug use and personality. With respect to the Adjective Check List, findings suggest that in general the participants scored high on the Positive scale and low on the Unfavorable scale. There were some correlations between personality and drug of choice, but not offense choice.
