Depressive symptoms have been mainly studied in young adults. More research is needed to understand the predictors of depressive symptoms in older populations. This thesis examined two types of predictors of depressive symptoms in old age: genetic and the quality of filial relationships from the perspective of the adult child and the parent. This study is among the first to use multilevel modeling techniques with extended families to examine heritability and to examine the importance of the parent-child relationship on aging parent's depressive symptoms. The study used the USC Longitudinal Study of Generations data set, which included a measure of depressive symptoms by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CESD).

520 $a The initial aim of this study was to test the importance of genotypic control by an estimate of heritability. The data consisted of 230 community-dwelling extended families that included 431 adult children, comprising full siblings, half siblings and cousins. The multilevel modeling technique has the advantage of maintaining the natural hierarchy of the extended family, and providing a more accurate estimate of heritability by accounting for non-independence of observations within families. Despite an 8.6% heritability estimate, heritability was not found to be meaningfully different from zero (95% CI: 0--57%; p = 0.71). There might be some heritability with respect to what the CESD captures; imprecision in the estimate suggests the need for future studies. However, this study raises another possibility that depressive symptoms measured by the CESD are not heritable but are influenced by non-genetic factors.
520 $a The main objective of the second study was to examine non-genetic factors: the role of aging parent and adult child's perceptions of support (instrumental and expressive) and attachment (affectual solidarity) in predicting parent's depressive symptoms over time. The longitudinal analysis of time-dependent qualitative measures at baseline, 3 and 6 years included 304 parents matched to a randomly selected adult study child from the heritability analysis. The final longitudinal analysis showed that the study child's reliance on the parent for instrumental support was negatively associated with parent's depressive symptoms over time (beta = -1.2; p = 0.0253), even after adjusting relevant covariates, such as age, gender, income, sibship size, self-rated health, proximity of child's residence, and study child's depressive symptoms. The longitudinal results for expressive support were not significant. The results for affectual solidarity were initially significant, but did not persist after adjusting for important covariates. These findings suggest that a child's reliance on his/her parent for more practical support in adulthood, implying maintenance of the parental role, lowers depressive symptoms in older parents.
