Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama in Huntsville, 2004.
The primary objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between team health (how well the team functions as a team) and overall project team performance. The central concept of this research is that project managers will achieve overall higher project team performance by focusing on building healthy project teams in addition to the traditional cost, schedule, and technical performance metrics. A Team Health Assessment Instrument was developed as part of this study to measure team health. Elrod (1999) developed a Self-Directed Team Performance Survey that was used to determine overall project team performance in this research. Data were collected from 678 project team members representing 100 project teams. The results show sufficient evidence to suggest that there is a positive relationship between team health and overall project team performance. This verifies the central concept of this research that project managers may achieve overall higher project team performance by focusing on building healthy project teams in addition to the traditional cost, schedule, and technical performance metrics.
