Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2004.
The creation of a stained-glass window is a complex undertaking that involves the fundamentals of good design as well as a working knowledge of transmitted light and its distinctive effects upon colored glass. Comprehensive research and understanding of historic stained-glass philosophy, designers and workshops as well as the works and philosophies of contemporary glass artists are utilized for this project to create original stained-glass designs. The focus on light, color, line and texture emphasize the variety and complex interaction of these components within each design that is created by the artist-author. The working relationship between the artist-designer and craftsman-fabricator is also explored. An examination of the written information, completed original window designs, and artist's journal establish the artistic and personal relationships, critical thinking process, media mechanics and characteristic properties exclusive to stained-glass art. This project and its introduction seek to unlock the secrets of successful stained-glass design and its unique relationship and interaction with light.
