The purpose of this study is to describe in detail Korean-English bilingual children's speech overlap in English turn-taking organization in order to compare it to native English speakers' speech overlap. The results may allow us to consider turn-taking skills as a marker of conversational fluency in L2 speakers of English. The subjects are two 9-year old Korean-English bilingual children. Five casual conversations are analyzed in terms of turn-taking features.

The results reveal that the subjects exhibit similarities in terms of the frequency rate of overlap and the duration of overlap; however, they show differences with reference to the way they resolve their overlaps, and the function of overlap. This study shows that the subjects appear to have mastered the English discourse system constraints of turn-taking, but they seem to remain under influence of Korean socio-cultural values in terms of ritual constraints of turn-taking.
