Thesis (Ph.D.)--Cornell University, 2004.
This dissertation investigates the EPP properties triggering A-movement on the TP and nuP levels in English and Korean. Chapter 1 addresses a microparametric syntactic approach to nominal/predicational PPs and the EPP. Chapter 2 argues that the EPP is optional in Korean and the universality of the EPP cannot thus be maintained. It further claims that the language lacks verb-raising in overt syntax, supporting for the view that the EPP is not universal/obligatory. Chapter 3 demonstrates that, in English, nu has an obligatory EPP-feature triggering overt movement of the complement of a passive/unaccusative verb to its Spec position (Bowers 2002a). It proposes to parameterize SpecnuP (Inner and Outer SpecnuP Parameters ), eliminating "mixed" positions in terms of A/A-bar status. Evidence emerges from Particle/Object Shift in Icelandic and A-scrambling in German and Korean. Chapter 4 explores locative inversion in Korean. It holds that the inverted PP exhibits certain A-properties, which implies that inversion is triggered by the optional EPP-features on nu and T. It also shows that the inverted "PP" exhibits nominal properties and proposes that the inverted category is indeed KP. Chapter 5 looks into locative alternation in English and Korean. It proposes that the verbs of locative alternation subcategorize a small clause headed by Pr in the sense of Bowers 1993. With and lo are argued to be predication markers, viz., Pr0. As a consequence, it follows that the with/lo -PP construction cannot undergo inversion from the fact that it is, in fact, a predicate nominal rather than a true PP, eligible for (locative) inversion.
