Three experiments on training in spatial ability were performed. The logic for the three experiments was generally the same. The Vandenberg test, based on the Shepard and Metzler blocks, was used each time as a pretest-posttest measure of Spatial Orientation. The Minnesota Formboard was used as a measure of Spatial Visualization, as a posttest only in the first experiment, and as a pretest-posttest in the second and third experiments. Additional items were constructed for the Vandenberg test in the second and third experiments to overcome ceiling effects. Each experiment drew subjects from an introductory psychology course, and each experiment had sufficient numbers of men and women in the experimental and control conditions to permit analysis of sex effects. Training was approximately 2 hours, 1 hour each week. Controls took tests, returned in 4th week to take posttests.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Experiment 1. Subjects averaged 21 years of age; 12 males, 7 females in the training group; 10 males, 21 females in the control group. Training condition consisted of work with Thurstone Flags test, concrete models of Flags; Bingham cubes; concrete models of cubes; Card and Figures; models of Cards and Figures; Guilford Clocks test. Results: ANACOVA on Vandenberg test (Vandenberg pretest covariate, 2-way sex by treatment), no interaction, significant treatment effect at .05 level, no sex effect but ceiling effect for trained males on the posttest. ANOVA on the Formboard showed no significant effects. Conclusion: Training on materials from the same factor family can raise scores on a Spatial Orientation test. No sex differences as a result of training, no increase on Formboard "Visualization" scores.

Experiment 2. Same general outline as 1. Trained group, 17 males, 24 females; control group, 14 males, 17 females. A drawing exercise was substituted for part of the training materials. ANACOVA Vandenberg and ANACOVA Formboard (Formboard pretest was covariate) showed no interaction, treatment or sex effects.

Experiment 3. One training group was similar to Experiment 1, 15 males, 16 females; control group was 12 males, 14 females. A new training intervention "test similarity" had 12 males, 15 females. Test similarity condition has subjects practice with Shepard and Metzler figures and with wooden block representations of figures. Results: ANACOVA Vandenberg test showed a treatment effect, significant at .05 level due to Test Similarity condition (no replication of Experiment 1 results, since group in that training condition did slightly poorer than controls). Men increased more than women (p = .08 for overall experiment sex effect).

Training materials based on spatial orientation factor materials raised scores on spatial orientation posttest in first experiment; not replicated in third experiment. Practice with test components in third experiment induced rise of roughly 3 SD for males, 2 SD for females, above original status. Practice effects (e.g. taking the test twice) was significant at the .05 level for control groups on Vandenberg and Formboard for all experiments. Training on orientation materials had no effect in any experiment on raising Formboard visualization scores.
