This study is based on research conducted with four Queer young adults (17--22 years old) in Alberta schools and communities. Drawing upon theoretical discourses from Queer theory, critical pedagogy, narrative inquiry, postmodern theory, and feminist poststructural theory, I use a multi-disciplinary approach to investigate how formal secondary and postsecondary educational environments in Alberta socially, culturally, politically, and pedagogically construct (and thus marginalize) Queer young adults as abnormal or deviant.

This research also examines how Queer young adults create spaces and languages of resistance as they work within non-formal learning communities to account for the educational absences and institutionalized silences that surround their sex-and-gender differences. I employ a multi-method research design that utilizes open-ended interviews, narrative-vignette construction, and visual narrative (photographic) techniques. This research will provide educators with knowledge of sex-and-gender differences to assist in policy and program development designed to create safe, caring, and inclusive schools and communities.
