In the consideration of child and adolescent development, social workers take an ecological approach that acknowledges the importance of different contexts to a child's or adolescent's well-being. A student's perception of the secondary school climate indicates his or her level of connectedness to the school community of teachers and peers. Connectedness allows the student to use the social capital of the school to maximize education gains. This study focuses on the relationship between school climate and academic outcomes for secondary school students in the American public education system. In addition, this study explores the moderating effect of the parent-adolescent relationship on the link between school climate and academic outcomes. Using a large nationally representative sample of adolescents, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), this study seeks to fill research gaps by refining our understanding of family social capital and school social capital as determinants of secondary school success. The study assesses different relational forms based on student gender, age, and ethnicity.
