This qualitative case study documents the schooling experiences of Hispanic/Latina immigrant students attending high school in a fast-growing region of North Carolina. Since the mid 1990s, North Carolina experienced unprecedented growth in its Latino population, outpacing the rest of the country. In the absence of research, policy and administrative decisions affecting this new immigrant population are being made in a virtual research vacuum.

To elicit answers to the complex question, "What is the schooling experience of Latina immigrant students?" I studied one high school in one of the fastest-growing areas of the state. I observed and conducted interviews with immigrant students over the course of three semesters. Eleven students and their teachers participated in the interviews and observations.

Major themes in the students' schooling experience emerged from the data and provided the structure for presenting the information gathered. These themes proved critical in further analyzing the common experiences of the students. Presented in part through the words of the students themselves, the seven themes treated are: Student and staff lack of competence ("no se" attitude); the absence of relationships of "confianza"; prejudice and misunderstandings; the students' changing identities; Latino v. Black conflicts; teacher roles and expectations; and the differing expectations of the purpose of schooling. The students' experiences are then interpreted using as framework Cummins' (1993, 1994, 1996) theory of language minority students' achievement. The themes that emerged from the research are interpreted in light of Cummins' four variables of minority student empowerment, offering some findings on the immigrant students' schooling experience. Recommendations are offered in three sections: recommendations for practice, for research and for policy.

Much of the research was conducted in Spanish, which presented some challenges for reporting the findings to an English mono-lingual academic audience. Language issues are one of the challenges faced in this research. The conflicting roles of the researcher---local pastor, member of the State Board of Education, local activist, student advocate---are also explored as part of the study.
