Young females in grades 7--9 in a small urban center, who experienced significant difficulties in the primary grades and lived in poverty, were identified as potential subjects. Three girls were selected for in-depth interview sessions based on their reflective and communication abilities. Other sources of data included school-wide survey results, report cards, photographs, and schoolwork. Qualitative research methodologies were chosen to collect, report, and analyze the data. Constructed narratives are presented for each girl in her own words, describing her past and current life, future goals, and especially, her experiences in school.

The data were analyzed employing several methods: trait analysis using resilience, then feminist frameworks; constant data comparison to discover common socio-cultural contexts and emerging themes; and critical examination of political/economic influences.

A number of interesting and unexpected findings resulted from the study. The prediction of resilience is evidently negatively correlated with individual identity development in young female adolescents. An inherent tension exists between the "success" and "conformity" notions embedded within the construct of resilience and the "resistance" feature fundamental to the development of female voice and identity. Several common cultural contexts are found in the narratives, as are three important internal struggles. There is evidence to support the conclusion that school provides unequal access to information and programs for students and their families, resulting in a discriminatory distribution of resources and opportunities. Evidence also suggests that the decision-making process used in school serves to limit choice and restrict student voice. Finally, the study demonstrates the importance of using a multi-modal approach to avoid the common practice of distilling complex phenomena down to over-simplistic "essential elements."
