Thesis (Ed.D.)--Baylor University, 2001.
The purpose of this study was to determine if identifying factors existed that would explain differential participation among females in high school mathematics, specifically the enrollment in high school calculus. The factors investigated were socioeconomic status, educational aspirations, the education of both parents, and the number of siblings. These factors have been found to affect student achievement at large (Alwin, 1991; Blake, 1991; Kalmijn, 1994; Maynard & Mc Grath, 1997). However, the present study proposed that these factors could be used to predict the enrollment in high school calculus by mathematically talented females.

The database used for this study was taken from the National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS: 88) conducted by the National Center for Educational Statistics in 1988. At that time, more than 20,000 eighth graders across the nation were identified, tested, and surveyed. The sample for the present research was the female students who were enrolled in algebra at the onset of this study. Because prior achievement in mathematics has been shown to be the strongest predictor of mathematics participation (Parsons, 1980), only females who scored in the fourth quartile on the mathematics section of the standardized tests were included in the sample. Data on this group was collected pertaining to the factors being examined. The 1992 follow-up of the NELS data was used to determine which of the subjects continued in the sequence of high school mathematics courses to take calculus and which did not.

Using a logistical regression, the results of this research determined that the combined factors of parental education, socioeconomic status, number of siblings, and educational aspirations did not have predictive value in determining the probability of a mathematically talented female enrolling in high school calculus.
