Studies of white's racial attitudes have played a prominent role in the sociological literature on race and ethnic relations. For the most part, however, these studies have focused exclusively on white adults. The present study attempts to say something new about U.S. race relations in general, by studying white youth's racial attitudes in particular. Data for this study are drawn from 23 years of national probability samples of white high school students (1976--1998) from the University of Michigan's Monitoring the Future Survey (N = 51,361).

I develop a multilevel conceptual framework that considers the influence of macro-, meso-, and micro-level factors on white youth's racial attitudes. By focusing on multiple levels, my framework underscores the idea that white youth's attitudes develop within local communities but communities that are also embedded in broader societal contexts.

I test derivative hypotheses of my framework in three data analytic chapters. The first chapter examines the social determinants of white youth's racial attitudes. The results indicate important differences in how the social determinants relate to traditional (i.e., social distance) and contemporary racial attitudes (i.e., racial apathy). For instance, both region and religiosity were related to traditional but not contemporary racial attitudes. The second chapter examines changes in white youth's attitudes from 1976 to 1998. Although I found a liberalizing trend for traditional racial attitudes I did not find a similar pattern for contemporary racial attitudes. The results for contemporary racial attitudes indicate that young white's have become more racially intolerant over past five years. The third chapter investigates the influence of contextual level factors (e.g., school racial composition) on white youth's racial attitudes, net of within-school, individual-level factors. I found that the effect of percentage black on white youth's attitudes was nonlinear. White youth become more racially tolerant as the black percentage increases to about 35 percent and then become more intolerant as the black percentage increases beyond 35 percent. On the other hand, the effects of percentage Asian and percentage Latino on young whites' racial attitudes are linear. As the proportion of Asian and Latino students in a school grows young whites' become more racially tolerant.
