Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 1995.
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the current status and practices within secondary social studies curricula in Missouri. The sample consisted of 120 randomly selected Missouri high schools and their appropriate feeder schools. Data was collected by questionnaires completed by social studies department heads and teachers. An 86 percent return rate was received from the selected schools. Eight schools were then purposely selected to gather additional information, through interviews and observation, concerning current review and/or revision of secondary social studies curriculum in Missouri schools. Results of this study show little change in the status and practices within secondary social studies in Missouri secondary schools. The predominate scope and sequence pattern found was: grade 7, interdisciplinary "social studies"; grades 8 and 9, American history; grade 10, world history; grade 11, American government; and grade 12, electives. American history, world history, "social studies", American government and civics, respectively, were the most frequently reported courses that constitute the common social studies curriculum in Missouri secondary schools. American history, world history, psychology, geography, sociology, American government, contemporary issues and economics, respectively, were the most frequently offered social studies courses. The highest enrollment increase was reported in world history, American government, geography, sociology and contemporary issues. A decrease in enrollment was reported in "social studies", Missouri history, economics and American/social problems. Missouri secondary schools require 3.12 mean units of social studies credit for graduation. Objective tests, textbook assignments, whole class discussion, lecture, homework assignments, and individual seatwork most frequently characterize instruction within social studies in Missouri secondary schools. Currently, 82.7 percent of Missouri secondary schools are reviewing and/or revising their social studies curriculum. A variety of documents, mostly state and local, and processes are being utilized in this review and/or revision. National documents are for the most part totally disregarded in the review and/or revision process.
