Thesis (Psy.D.)--Widener University, Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, 2004.
Since the mid 1980s there has been in increase in societal awareness regarding juvenile sexual behavior. The appropriateness of behavior in these youth that was once ignored or viewed as normative is now being questioned. As a result, clinicians are more frequently asked to evaluate these juveniles to determine the seriousness of their sexual behavior. There are several existing methods of risk assessment for juveniles who have sexual behavior problems, however, they have little empirical validation. Therefore, these methods maybe inaccurate predictors of risk, which can result in inappropriate legal and therapeutic interventions. The purpose of this dissertation was twofold. First, this dissertation aimed to educate the reader regarding juvenile sexual behavior. The second purpose was to examine the empirical validity of several factors that were hypothesized to be associated with juvenile sexual offense recidivism. Results suggested that the majority of juveniles in this study were correctly classified as to their level of risk for sexual reoffense based on their total number of risk factors and total sexual adjudications. This supports the practice of using a static and dynamic risk factor approach with these juveniles as opposed to the current actuarial instruments.
