We test the Bowman and King [GRL, 2001] "stress recovery" model by examining the pattern of strain released by small events prior to the 1992 Landers earthquake. The stress recovery (SR) model was developed to explain observations of accelerating seismicity preceding large earthquakes. The model proposes that the accelerating seismicity sequences result from tectonic loading that erodes the stress shadow from a prior event and increases elastic strain across the locked portion of the region's main fault. We test the following predictions of the SR model: (1) The moment released by small events preceding a large earthquake should increase with spatial and temporal proximity to the upcoming mainshock. (2) The pattern of strain released by the precursory seismicity should correlate with the model pre-mainshock strain field. (3) The focal mechanisms of the small earthquakes should be consistent with promotion by the developing pre-mainshock stress field. Our tests of the first prediction yielded mixed results. Spatially binning the seismicity did not reveal an inward extension of the moment release. The median distance of yearly moment release, however, does support the predicted inward extension. Our tests of the second prediction support the SR model, but raise the question of how the magnitude 6.1 Joshua Tree foreshock of Landers fits into the SR model. The seismicity-based strain field positively correlates with the pre-Landers model strain field, but only if the post-Joshua Tree events are excluded. This correlation is optimized when an approximately N-S compressive stress of 5 to 30 bars is added to the model. Our tests of the third prediction do not reveal the expected increase with spatio-temporal proximity to Landers of the percentage of precursory events promoted by the model-based pre-Landers stress field.
