This thesis documents the professional life of Webster Catherwood, a Canadian costume cutter and designer born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1929, who has worked extensively in North America, Europe, and Australia, in the triple art forms of dance, opera, and film. The geographical breadth of Catherwood's career is matched by the eminence of the figures with whom he has collaborated: over the course of a professional life that has spanned more than five decades, he studied and worked alongside many twentieth-century luminaries of the dance and costume design world.

The primary source of material for this research is personal interviews conducted with Catherwood in Toronto between January 2002 and May 2003. Chapter One provides an account of the principal experiences that have shaped Catherwood's training and professional life; Chapters Two and Three comprise focussed discussions of aspects of his costuming work for ballet and Baroque dance abroad and in Toronto.

A basic professional chronology is included as an appendix, as are a selected filmography, some photographs of Catherwood's costumes, and a reference sketch of a period Baroque costume design which relates to the subject matter discussed in Chapter Three.
