This is an exploratory study of transcendent music performance in higher education from an interpretivist, phenomenological perspective, and is descriptive and explanatory in nature (Van Marten, 1990). Interviews with participants and pertinent literature are examined as sources of information and meaning. Purposive, snowball sampling provided the means for locating research participants who are professional musicians and educators with significant ties to higher education, and identified themselves as having had an experience of transcendent music performance (Vogt, 1999). Through conversational interviews and subsequent dialogue, the actual life experience of transcendent music performance is explored, and the implications for higher education are examined. As in all phenomenological inquiry, connections and possibilities are sought to gain new awareness and understanding (Giorgi, 1985).

For the purpose of this study, transcendent performances are defined as optimal experiences that lift performers above normal physical and mental fears and limitations into an expanded awareness and enlarged sense of self (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990). During such optimal experiences, an inclusive acceptance of all elements of the experience and a sense of effortless and timeless flow may occur (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).

In a world beset with problems that often stem from narrowly circumscribed world views and the perceived fears and limitations of differing cultures, the higher education community must attend to alternative ways to experience expanded perceptions, and to new models for viewing activities on a global level. The insight gained from this study of actual transcendent experiences may indeed have global implications, and the transfer value of this knowledge extends beyond the disciplines of music performance and higher education.
