Texcellana, a newly developed fabric, is a blend of 70% cotton/30% wool from Texas products. The purpose of this study was to compare the consumer acceptability of knitted Texcellana to the acceptability of two readily available and consumer accepted knitted jersey fabrics by a visual evaluation of selected design features. A nonprobability purposive sample consisted of 41 women employed full time: 22 nonhome economists and 19 home economists. The subjects were members of two cluster groups in Texas, an organization for women in business and area Agricultural Extension Agents in Home Economics.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Data were obtained through a Likert-type scale using responses of excellent, good, acceptable, poor and not acceptable. The dependent variable was acceptability and the independent variables were fiber content, selected style features, and garment type. Reliability of the instrument was assessed by a panel of clothing and textile experts. Hypotheses of the study were tested using Chi Square Test of Independence, Log-Linear Analysis, and descriptive statistics.

Two garment types, structured and soft fluid, were constructed in each of the three greige fabrics: (a) Texcellana, (b) 100% acrylic, and (c) 50% cotton/50% polyester. They were exhibited on dressforms and the subjects evaluated the garments independently.

The results from the investigation revealed that consumer acceptance of Texcellana was positive compared to acrylic and polyester/cotton blend. Home economists rated Texcellana higher than the two control fabrics and indicated a strong preference for Texcellana in the garments with structured techniques. Nonhome economists rated Texcellana as no less acceptable than 100% acrylic or 50% cotton/50% polyester jersey knit.

Numerous style features and construction techniques were found acceptable for Texcellana. Both garment types, structured and soft fluid, were perceived as acceptable by women employed full time. Findings indicated that Texcellana, an all-natural fiber, was equal to or no less acceptable to the employed female consumer than 100% acrylic or 50% cotton/50% polyester blend.
