The purpose of this study was to investigate the learning achievement, satisfaction and retention of students using two different instructional methods, whole brain instruction and a more traditional instructional method, in the nursing department of a technology college in Pingtung, Taiwan. The treatment group included 48 students, and the control group included 37 students. This research lasted six weeks and each group met for a total of twelve hours. Immediately after the treatment, the students' learning achievement and learning satisfaction were examined. Two months later, the students again took the achievement test to measure how well they remembered the content.

This study provides strong evidence that learners' achievement improved with the use of a whole-brain instructional model (4MAT). The result also indicated that students of the whole-brain instructional model had better knowledge satisfaction than ones of the traditional model. In addition, retention appears to be another benefit of such a model. Last, anecdotal findings through a personal interview with the instructor indicated that she strongly preferred whole-brain instruction.
