This research is an attempt to understand the relationship between social cohesion and the notion of being human. In particular, it is an attempt to understand the implication of social cohesion for the notion of being human. For this purpose, it will focus on two matters in its study. These are the raison d'etre of social cohesion, and the modus operandi of social cohesion. It chooses Durkheim and Mencius for their views on these two matters of inquiry.

Durkheim is chosen for several reasons. First, he attempts to chart a general course of the progress of human societies from their most nascent to their most complex state of existence, which, in his time, was the industrial state. Second, the focus of his work, in charting the general course of the progress of societies, is social cohesion and its implication for the notion of being human. Third, he was among the first of modern-day thinkers who attempted to study social phenomena using the scientific method. In investigating the phenomenon of social cohesion and its implication for the notion of being human, Durkheim departed from his predecessors who studied it mainly from a philosophical and political standpoint. Durkheim, on the other hand, grounds his study of social cohesion by locating it in the context of real life social experiences, looking at the morphological factors such as demography, migration trends, labor, and suicide, as well as the institutional and symbolic factors. Therefore, Durkheim was among the first of modern-day thinkers to relate philosophy and political thought to sociology.

This research also looks at Mencius. Besides Confucius, Mencius was another towering figure in the Confucian tradition whose teaching and thought, together with those of Confucius, formed the basis of the mind and culture of the East-Asian peoples for more than two thousand years. While Confucius was the impetus of this tradition, providing the software of its success, it was Mencius who worked out the details of its contents and its modus operandi for this tradition to be workable in society, from personality development to social institutions.

This research will also explore the feasibility of liberal democracy as a workable source and formula of social cohesion to the notion of being human in modern times.

Francis Fukuyama, an American citizen of Japanese descent, wrote a book at the end of the Cold War era arguing for liberal democracy as the final condition of human history. This research will look at Fukuyama's arguments for liberal democracy as what he terms as "the end of history and the last man" and then posit Durkheim's and Mencius' thought in relation to these views in order to assess the feasibility of liberal democracy in modern times.
