This work assesses the bookends of the educational experience using techniques that approximate the characteristics of a controlled experiment. In the first essay, the longer-term effects of the early childhood program Project Head Start are assessed using a Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) that is based on changing enrollment patterns in and around 1960. This study finds evidence that enrollment in Head Start increases high school completion, decreases the receipt of public assistance in early adulthood, and reduces teen pregnancy. In contrast, this study finds no evidence that enrollment in Head Start affects teen criminal activity, academic performance, or job quality in early adulthood. The second essay is the documentation of a controlled experiment conducted across several college campuses regarding the impact of a concrete warning on the decision to plagiarize. This study finds evidence that a credible warning deters cheating more than either an honor code or general campus policy but that it does not deter the problem completely. The findings of this study also suggest that those with more to gain from cheating are less deterred by such a warning than those who are only cheating on the margin.
