Diffusion optical tomography is a technique of using near infrared (NIR) light in the wavelength range of 700 to 1000 nm to probe light scattering media, such as thick biological tissues, in order to derive images of their scattering and absorption coefficients (mus ',mua) [1]. Specifically, the goal of optical tomography is to reconstruct images of the optical coefficients (mus',mu a) within a spatial domain O based on the measurement made on the boundary ∂O [1]. Mathematically, the reconstruction of (mus',mu a) in optical tomography is a nonlinear [1], multi-minima inverse problem. In this work, we discuss the solution to this inverse problem using the finite element method and numerical optimization techniques.
