This study examines the subject of school recess from a historical perspective. School recess is currently in a state of crisis because it is systematically being removed from the school day. Problems such as violence and sexual harassment on the playground, as well as an increased need for instruction time, have prompted many educators to dismiss recess as a valuable part of the curriculum.

Evidence suggests that the recess period provides a number of benefits for children. Since it is generally the only time in the school day that children are autonomous, this time provides an opportunity for them to play, establish their own culture, freely interact with their peers and engage in other pursuits of their own choosing. Schoolmaster, John Brinsley, created the recess period in the 17th century because he believed that children benefited from a break in the school day. Subsequently, various other philosophers and educators also recognized the importance of interspersing the school day with free social space. Historical examples of recess are presented that indicate recess is an important part of the educational experience. The examples also show that misconduct at recess is not a modern day problem and that measures can be taken to make recess a fun and safe time for students. However, the desire by some educators during the progressive era to control the behavior of children at recess prompted them to introduce organized play programs to substitute for free play activity. The utilization of free play programs opens up a debate that considers the pros and cons of both organized play and free play.

The nature of the activities featured at recess should ultimately be left up to the students. Regardless of how students choose to spend their time they are entitled to a recess period as both laborers and as recipients of human rights. With more educational demands being placed upon students providing students with recess is more important than ever. It is the only time of the day when the students can escape the confining environment of the classroom and have some time to themselves.
