Thesis (Ph.D.)--George Mason University, 2004.
This thesis deals with design and implementation of an emerging 3D medical imaging system together with an universal image processing computer language specifically designed for medical imaging equipment. Experiments show that this new equipment can be used in many situations where Computerized Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can not be used or may be used only with difficulty. Testing was performed on a simulation system that we designed using two low dose tungsten x-ray tubes, two digital sensors, two projectors, data sampling and 3D devices, and a dual processor computer system at National Biomedical Research Foundation (Georgetown University Medical Center).

PPL (Picture Processing Language), the first computer language for medical equipment that I developed has novel memory management and dual-execution modes. A PPL program can be executed or compiled by a meta-interpreter depending on the method that a PPL program is called. It is an universal medical equipment computer language with Application Program Interface (API), interface with Digital Radiography (DR) sensors, 3D data processing, TCP/IP protocol, DICOM conformance, database and fast wavelet-based image compression algorithms.

To speed up the rendering process by introducing Reverse Prediction with Wavelets (RPW) method is another emphasis of this thesis. I prove that the image loading time in a rendering process or transmitting process can be reduced while still get a good image quality and Level Of Detail (LOD) control. Image-Based Rendering (IBR) applications such as remote diagnostic systems, collaborate real-time surgery and online museums use this technique can achieve better real-time animation effects which were not possible previously. Results show that image rendering speed on a remote client is approximately 2.5 times faster than traditional image compression methods.

Numerous emerging medical imaging technologies were applied during the imaging system design process include digital radiography detectors and TFT-based solid state direct-conversion circuits. A stereoscopic display and simulation software enables people to see 3D object without glasses at a wide angle. A new hybrid approach, and hyper-stereoscopic techniques using PPL together with FFT and wavelets analysis is discussed to acquire high quality image data and recover the stereo depth information in real-time.
