Gaseous and particulate air pollution concentration data were collected at Canyonlands National Park and Grand Canyon National Park during Summer 2001, Winter 2002, Summer 2002, and in some cases, continuously, in order to establish baseline trace gas and particulate concentrations in relation to present visibility conditions at remote areas within the Colorado Plateau. Meteorological and back trajectory data were also collected in order to understand the transport of these pollutants to the sampling sites and to determine possible pollutant sources.

520 $a The average carbon monoxide (CO) concentration during the summer at CLNP was 0.23 ppm and approximately 0.20 for during the winter. At GCNP, the average CO concentration during the summer and winter was 0.12 ppm and 0.05 ppm, respectively. The CO concentration at CLNP was consistently greater than at GCNP, but there were no statistically significant seasonal trends for CO at either site. For sulfur dioxide (SO2), the average summer concentrations at CLNP and GCNP were 0.3 ppb and 0.7 ppb, and the winter concentrations were 5.4 ppb and 1.2 ppb, respectively.
