In this dissertation we carried out detailed theoretical investigations, and performed accurate numerical simulations of the hydrodynamic collision and coalescence of two drops in linear flows. The aim of these studies was to improve the current understanding of the problem of flow-induced drop coalescence, and to develop accurate predictions for values of the parameters that are relevant for coalescence of drops with radius in the range of 10--100 mu m. This work was motivated, in part, by experiments carried out in our laboratory that suggested shortcomings in the accepted theory of flow-induced drop coalescence.

This dissertation contains four different theoretical contributions to understanding the problem of coalescence. In Chapter 2 we derive an analytic form of the flow-field inside the drops and in the external medium when the two drops are touching at the stagnation point of a uniaxial compressional flow. In Chapter 3 we show how to modify the existing low Ca theoretical framework to interpret experimental results. We show how to include to leading order the effect of glow-induced global deformation in the thin-film.

Numerical calculations for the entire two-drop collision problem help in understanding some of the shortcomings of the local theory; these are presented in Chapter 4. There are at least two approximations adopted in the local theory that are not justifiable given the results from the full numerical calculations: the neglect of flow-induced deformation, and we showed that there is a significant error made when modeling the flow in the drops as driven exclusively by the interfacial velocity over a flat interface.

Finally, in Chapter 5 we discussed a relatively simple estimate of the effect of 3D (perturbations) instabilities on film drainage. We derived a generalized 3D thin-film model aimed at obtaining predictions for flow-induced coalescence of equal-size drops when Ca << 1. An analytic solution was derived for the special case of constant thickness films. Interesting results were found that qualitatively mimic some of the behavior observed in experiments.
