This dissertation presents an in-depth study of sexed and gendered traits in provenienced Gulf Coast Olmec art, and the results of this analysis are used to assess gender distinctions in anthropomorphic Olmec imagery. These gender distinctions are then used to explore the social implications of gender roles implied in Olmec art and archaeology.

Until this time, no systematic study of sexed or gendered characteristics in Gulf Coast Olmec imagery has been undertaken, and gender representation is poorly understood in Olmec material culture. The pervasive confusion among scholars about gender in this imagery is largely attributable to the sexually ambiguous nature of both large and small Olmec stone sculpture. Most human figures are androgynous, with geometric, stylized forms; even the bodies of relatively naturalistic figures are often gender-ambiguous. In most past analyses of Olmec art, gender has been assigned in an inconsistent and arbitrary manner, with most images that express power and leadership assumed a priori to be male.

Gender distinctions are much more apparent, however, in the bodies of Olmec hand-molded ceramic figurines. In-depth study of these small images reveals a number of sexed and gendered physical features, garments, and adornments that can be used to help clarify sex and gender in other forms of Olmec sculpture. When this data is combined with information on the context and function of the sculptures, more complete interpretations of the Olmec imagery can be made. In addition, the gendered traits isolated in this study also show promise of being useful in other contexts, such as in helping to determine gender in Olmec burials.

An important revelation of this dissertation is that women are much more frequently depicted in Olmec sculpture than has previously been recognized; they are portrayed as supernaturals, as persons of power and high status, and even as rulers. This research illustrates the need to re-evaluate assumptions about gender roles that have been applied to Olmec art and culture in the past. It also suggests that answers to other questions about the Olmec may be found through more in-depth study of provenienced objects.
