Thesis (Ph.D.)--Hofstra University, 1987.
The focus of this study was to operationally define verbal abuse which is a major aspect of psychological maltreatment, and to use this definition to examine the relationship between perceived verbal child abuse, levels of peer relationships and the development of Global, Family and Social self-esteem as measured by the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. The Verbal Abuse Scale was initially developed which included the recollection of both the frequency of and also the stressfulness resulting from both negative and positive statements that parents made to their children. This scale was expected to discriminate between those who perceived verbal abuse from their parents and those who did not. Congruent validity was established by comparing the Verbal Abuse Scale to a direct question and to the Emotional Needs Met category of the Michigan Screening Profile of Parenting. Two hundred forty-two college students (73 males and 169 females) completed the scales and questionnaires utilized in the study. It is understood that limitations are inherent in the use of self-report and the validity of perceptions and recall, and generalization to other populations.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The results indicate that the Verbal Abuse Scale has two clusters which measure the frequency of and the perception of stressfulness from negative statements which would be considered to be abusive, and the frequency and the perception of stressfulness from lack of positive statements which may be an aspect of emotional neglect, or psychological unavailability.

Stepwise regression analyses procedures determined that together the frequency of positive statements and perceived stressfulness from negative statements accounted for 24% of the variability in Global Self-esteem (Mult.R = .49, p. < .001) and 39% of the variability in Family Self-esteem (Mult.R = .63, p. < .001). Levels of peer relationships only added significantly more to the variability of social self-esteem percentile scores.

This study contributes a further understanding of how verbal behaviors relate to specific areas of self-esteem. It also contributes a tool which would be valuable to both clinical and research psychology.
