Thesis (D.Ed.)--The Pennsylvania State University, 1992.
Adult day care programs (ADCPs), prominent in many European countries for years, are becoming increasingly prominent within the health care system of the United States. Research results indicate that ADCPs increase the quality of life for older adults, and suggest that ADCPs are also cost-effective when ADCP personnel can identify and serve only those elderly persons in need of the services offered by ADCPs. Thus, it is important that ADCP personnel have skills to accurately identify the needs of older adults. Yet, little is known about the backgrounds in gerontology of ADCP personnel. This study focused on educational gerontology within ADCPs, targeting the backgrounds in gerontology of ADCP personnel.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study focused on educational gerontology within ADCPs, targeting the backgrounds in gerontology of ADCP personnel.

Using data from a national survey, this study examined the backgrounds in gerontology of 300 ADCP administrators. Data obtained included demographic information about ADCP administrators, facilities and staff persons; ADCP administrators' perceptions of a need for knowledge about aging for themselves and staff persons; ADCP administrators' Knowledge about Aging and the Elderly (KAE) scale score; and number of learning activities offered in ADCPs.

Formal (credit-bearing coursework) and informal (non-credit experience) backgrounds in gerontology of ADCP administrators were estimated using two indices. The study examined relationships between these backgrounds and four factors: (1) ADCP administrators' knowledge and education about aging (Knowledge about Aging and the Elderly (KAE) questionnaire), (2) backgrounds in gerontology of ADCP administrators' staff persons, (3) the perceived importance of knowledge of aging by ADCP administrators, and (4) the number of learning activities offered by ADCPs.

Pearson correlation results showed formal education to be related to knowledge about aging, number of gerontology credits of part-time staff, gerontology certification by full-time staff, perceived importance of knowledge about aging by administrators and staff persons, and the number of learning activities offered by ADCPs. Informal education was related to the number of full-time staff with certification.

Based on regression results, formal education was found to predict increased primary and secondary learning activities provided at ADCPs. Formal education also was found to predict KAE scale scores, but the alpha coefficient test score was so low for the KAE scale that caution should be used in interpreting KAE scale results.
