Thesis (Ed.D.)--The University of Alabama, 1994.
This study involved development and subsequent testing of music fundamentals software for prospective N-6 teachers. Learning basic music theory may be possible with the use of computer programs augmented by limited classroom discussion as compared to classroom lecture augmented by computer drill. Reducing class time spent with music theory would allow instructors to increase time on essential instruction in performance skills. CAI software based on children's songs may supply future teachers with an associated repertoire of songs and related music fundamentals for the classroom. A software package was developed to teach music theory to preservice N-6 teachers using folk songs as examples. It was tested at two universities to determine effectiveness in courses designed for prospective N-6 teachers. Music theory class time was dramatically reduced, music fundamentals were learned when taught by computer and reinforced by an instructor, and students thought the song examples were helpful.Subjects--Topical Terms:
