The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate physical design elements and social/cultural conditions which impact the use of bamboo as an indigenous construction material for low-income housing in developing countries. In a pilot project for poor families in Costa Rica, funded by The United Nations Centre for Human Settlements and directed by the Costa Rican National Bamboo Project, interior and exterior design elements based on cultural/social, physical, and economic parameters were analyzed. Improvements in design and/or philosophy that could be used with housing projects for low-income families were proposed in an effort to make bamboo houses more acceptable and/or workable.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a In a post-occupancy participant-observer analysis of 45 of the first 93 newly constructed bamboo houses in three Costa Rican Indian communities, a combination of techniques including a questionnaire, interviews, visual documentation and site observations were utilized in the evaluation process. The researcher lived with an Indian family in one of the new bamboo houses during the period of the study.
520 $a Qualitative and quantitative study results indicated that bamboo is an acceptable, low-cost, locally available, renewable material which lends itself to self-construction methods. Most families were satisfied with their houses with the exception of house/room size and placement of kitchen. If project directors carefully consider the needs, values, and views of inhabitants, bamboo is a useful material in provision of more adequate, affordable and culturally acceptable housing in developing countries.
