International organizations have increased the number of languages used in their meetings, which has led to bottlenecks in covering recently used combinations such as into Danish from Greek and Portuguese, in addition to non-Western languages such as Arabic, Chinese and Japanese.

Although the first interpreters often came from mixed families or had been refugees, and most had a classical education, there were not enough of them to meet growing demands for interpretation, and schools have been playing an increasing role in this respect.

In addition to practical training, imitating as closely as possible actual working conditions, schools are called upon to produce the same cultural understanding that is required to work for international meetings on a variety of levels and dealing with any aspect of world knowledge.
