Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2004.
As colleges and universities explore and adopt new methods of teaching by means of technology, it seems an appropriate time to examine the effects on students and learning in the Internet-based classroom. The benefits of computer-mediated communication (CMC) courses include increased equality and higher participation rate, because of reduced status and social cues quiet students might find their voice. Undoubtedly, the rapid increase of online teaching in colleges and universities, as well as the need to examine the marginalizing effects of CMC on teaching and learning, necessitates further study and discussion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics and effectiveness of a "live" small group discussion process to see if the same differences in face-to-face (FTF) communication practice between men and women would still be present. It was found that reduced social cues and constraints in the CMC environment lead to more equal participation between genders.
