The aim of the present work is a critical consideration of the underlying assumptions of ideas of time and concepts of chronology building in Aegean prehistoric archaeology. Central to the line of argument employed throughout this work is that the concept of time has been heretofore utilized in a very limited way in archaeological thought, which does not do full justice to its potential as a heuristic and methodological tool; for the most part, the use of time in Aegean archaeology is reduced to the idea of a chronometric device.

Archaeological notions of time were derived from Victorian uniformitarian assumptions. In addition, the archaeological discipline emerged within the wider socio-cultural and economic/political frame of mid-19th century Europe. This background is deemed to account for a number of poorly-based assumptions on the concept of time still dominant in 21st century archaeology. This frame of reference for the formation of archaeology as a scientific discipline is examined as far as is it deemed necessary for discussions of time concepts and chronology building. Also, the specificities of Greek archaeology in the 19th and beginning of the 20th century---a rather understudied issue---are outlined and the origins of current ideas and biases are sought and found there.

Selected case studies from the Aegean region are employed to illustrate the thesis supported in the present work, with a focus on the archaeology of the Cyclades in the third millennium BC. Emphasis is given to the issue of the predominance of technological advancements as chronological, but also as cultural, markers. The issue of transition at the threshold of the third millennium BC is discussed, forming a case study for an inquiry on the construction of transitional periods in archaeology in general. The question of the existence of a 'gap' in the occupation of the southern part of the Greek mainland during a great part of the fourth millennium is then scrutinized.

In the end, what is suggested is that overall generalized chronological charts and diagrams can only be suggestive and can merely form a point of departure for our anthropological inquiries, rather than an end in their own right, while seeking real people's time. It is proposed that present-day archaeologists of the Aegean region in this third millennium AD should instead focus on the resolution of internal site problems and site understanding: i.e. even more problem-oriented site work, than is presently undertaken, prior to attempting grand syntheses of Aegean chronology and culture in the third millennium BC.
