Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2004.
Chapter 1 provided the research foundation for this fantasy theme analysis of the antebellum anti-dueling movement. Chapter 2 examined the historical foundation of the code duello in the United States specifically focusing on the Hamilton/Burr duel and its importance as the cause for inciting this anti-dueling social movement against the backdrop of the Second Great Awakening. Chapter 3 examined how the clergy reacted to the death of Hamilton and his dying confession of faith through their sermonic rhetoric. This chapter also examined the various remedies to eliminate dueling offered by the clergy in their rhetoric. Chapter 4 presented the circumstances of the Cilley/Graves duel and analyzed how the clergy renewed their campaign against the code duello thirty-four years after the death of Hamilton. The final chapter summarized the major conclusions of this study, discussed its implications for the field of rhetorical studies, evaluated the usefulness of the fantasy theme analysis as a methodology, and proposed avenues for future research.
