The problem. With increasing commercialization of education, there is a need for educational leaders to know what makes some students to prefer traditional to online methods of education. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the reliable differences in the personality of those respondents who preferred traditional or on-line methods of education. Demographic variables were also evaluated for differences.

Five variables of personality (extroversion, conscientiousness, materialism, emotional stability, and openness) and four demographics variables (gender, age, income, and education) were measured in relation to the variable of education type to determine whether personality factors or demographic factors demonstrated differences for students who prefer traditional versus online education.

Method. A survey of undergraduate and graduate students on college campuses in the San Diego area was conducted. Independent t tests evaluated the differences for those who preferred traditional or online education.

Results. Reliable and statistically significant differences were found between respondents preferring traditional versus online education for all personality variables tested. Those who preferred traditional education scored significantly higher on extroversion, conscientiousness, emotional stability, materialism, and openness. In addition, those who preferred traditional education reported earnings on average almost twice as much as those who preferred online education.
