Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1992.
The dissertation explores the problem of method in New Testament ethics by focusing on the question of how canonical texts can form and inform the moral discernment of contemporary Christians regarding wealth and possessions. The first part focuses on the general methodological problem encountered in using the New Testament in normative ethics. Chapter One reviews and critiques the proposals of James Gustafson, Larry Rasmussen and Bruce Birch, and Allen Verhey, and gives some attention to the work of Stanley Hauerwas and Thomas Ogletree. In Chapter Two, these critiques are used as the basis for a constructive methodological proposal. Here the claim is made that attention to the sociohistorical and literary context of specific texts, and to the kinds of moral argument internal to them, provide vital direction to efforts to understand their continuing relevance for the modern church.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Part II consists largely in the exegesis of the Greek texts of specific passages chosen for their representation of distinct sources within the canonical teaching on wealth. Here in Chapters Three through Six, literary, sociohistorical and form criticism are used in the exegesis of Mark 10:17-31, Luke 12:22-34, II Corinthians 8:1-15, and James 5:1-6. Chapter Seven completes the section with an overview of the canon's material on wealth and possessions, and with a table of relevant texts.

A third and final Part uses the results of exegesis and the general methodological proposal to address the question of how the New Testament can contribute to the moral reflection of contemporary Christians on the ethics of ownership. Chapter Eight reviews the dominant themes regarding the moral significance of wealth and possessions in the canon of Christian Scripture, and Chapter Nine proposes a series of questions as tools for the moral discernment of the modern Christian community.
